Word |
Tables: Learn how to use invisible tables to layout a complex page, how to use tables (along with find and replace) to quickly manipulate data into the form you need, thus avoiding repetitious typing. Create tables that calculate data. Forms: Throw away that typewriter! Create forms that can be easily filled out on the computer, with data validation, calculated fields, drop-down lists, etc. Merging: Use the merge feature to create labels, etc Learn what the options are and why you would use each one. Save time making multiple merges on one page. Tracking and Reviewing: This is a great tool for collaborating with your team, but it imposes special responsibilities on the original author of the document. Styles: Use this feature to automate the creation and editing of long documents and make them easier to update. |
Excel |
Lookup Tables: Use this feature to display additional information when you input data. (Type a zip code and Excel automatically fills in the city and state, convert test averages to letter grades, or a 4-point GPA, etc.) Absolute Cell References: Control how Excel manages formulas by using absolute references or by naming cells. Does price*miles or total*tax make more sense to you than AF37*CG105? If so, this is the tool for you. Conditional Formatting: Excel can give you visual warnings when data meets certain criteria (sales goals reached, past due amounts, students with failing grades, etc.). 3-D Formulas: Explore how Excel can calculate from one worksheet to another and even from one workbook to another. |
Excel PivotTables |
Pivot Tables: Summarize data tables in a snap with this powerful feature--without touching the underlying data in a worksheet--a must-have tool for people who deal with data exported from databases. |
